HELP FOR WHERE YOU

There's something
puzzling about the phrase "finding ways to
be relevant" when such words fall from the
lips of the church. How can the issues of
eternal life to be lived in the
everlasting Kingdom of God not be
relevant? How can the forgiveness of sins,
the settling of accounts with God, the
restoration of a meaningful and satisfying
relationship with the Creator not be
relevant? How can it not be relevant to
walk daily in the companionship of the
Holy Spirit? Yet, we keep hearing from the
distant voices of leadership that the
church must find ways to be
relevant!
One supposes that the
issue is style, perhaps style of music, or
some new version of Scripture, or the way
we dress for worship, conduct Sunday
School or frame the gospel we are intended
to preach and teach. Sadly, though, a
careful ear will easily detect one change
after another in what is by definition an
unchangeable message. That's where the
problem comes in. We may find new methods
by which to tell it, but we may not find a
new message! We are not at liberty to
change God's message in order to be
relevant to life in the kingdom of
Barabas.
Jesus is still the
center of our message. His death, burial
and glorious resurrection are still the
unchangeable pillars of the life
transforming message of God to our world.
Paul said: "I resolved to know nothing
among you save Jesus Christ and Him
crucified..." Though Paul also understood
the necessity of meeting people where they
were, always seeking to understand their
need, condition, and even the causation of
their struggles, he was never prepared to
diminish the central place in the gospel
that is ever and always occupied by our
Lord Jesus Christ. On that matter there
was no room for compromise.
The "onlyness" of
Jesus, the exclusivity of His place in the
economy of God, the singularity of His
saving self-sacrifice__ these were of all,
the most relevant truths ever told. So
also are they still! If the church would
be truly relevant, she needs to get back
to these basics, preach the good news,
make disciples who will believe and share
their discoveries of life in the Son, and
consistently refuse to let the story of
"church-life be about me, my, and I!
Always our relevant story is about Him,
about Jesus Christ our Savior and the hope
of this world.
